One of the key items on your wedding planning checklist is your wedding cake. This includes finding the baker of your dreams, choosing flavors, designing it, ordering it, and ultimately enjoying it on your big day! But when should you start the process of planning your cake?
As with most facets of wedding planning, the sooner, the better. The cake is central to most couples’ wedding celebrations. If it’s important to you and your fiancé and you want it to be designed specifically for you two, it’s best to select and book your baker as soon as you can.
Why?
Just like venues, bakers are booked for weddings and other events months, or even years, in advance. Once a bakery is booked for a date, there’s no “wiggle room” to squeeze in your cake into their schedule.
In general, you should start looking for a baker about a year in advance. First, schedule a consultation to figure out what cake design you like and make sure it fits within your budget. Once you have found your baker, schedule a tasting to ensure you not only like their visual work but also their product. As soon as you’ve made your choice, it’s time to book.
Large wedding cakes, 3-tiers or more, should be booked 6 to 12 months out from the date of your wedding. These cakes take a lot more time to decorate, so dates fill up faster. Your average bakery will only book a certain number of wedding cakes per date, depending on size, design, and delivery location.
If your wedding will be more intimate, and your cake only needs to feed 50 or fewer guests, you can usually wait to book your cake until the 2 to the 6-month window. However, it’s never too early to book or inquire, and it’s still recommended to book as soon as you’ve decided on your baker!
